Geometry in Action at Middle School South

Students present their “Flip This House” geometry project to classmates using a large classroom display showing a home design.

Geometry students at Middle School South recently stepped into the role of designers, contractors and real estate investors through a hands-on project called “Flip This House.”

Led by teacher Brianna Stone, honors geometry students were challenged to renovate an “income property” by making design upgrades while applying the geometry concepts they have been learning in class. Students calculated area, perimeter and measurements to determine materials needed for projects such as flooring installation, room redesigns and other home improvements.

The project pushed students to think beyond textbook problems and apply math in practical, career-connected ways. During presentations, students showcased detailed renovation plans, budgeting ideas and visual before-and-after transformations of their properties.

Students redesigned the flooring throughout their “property,” carefully calculating square footage and selecting materials that matched the style of the space. They also planned paint updates for the kitchen, living room and three bedrooms, while using geometry skills to guide their decisions. Students even selected a new air conditioning unit based on the house's size and cooling needs.

Projects like “Flip This House” highlight how classroom learning can connect directly to future careers and everyday life. Students explored skills tied to construction, interior design and project planning while strengthening critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills along the way.

At GJPS, creating meaningful learning experiences that connect academics to practical opportunities remains an important part of preparing students for success beyond the classroom.
